Links in a Chain/Multiple Assailants.

It has been said that 'it is impossible to predict the chaos of a violent confrontation/assault.' It has been my own experience that this is not necessarily true, at least not entirely.  In my experience, as well as statistically, people tend to favor the right sided haymaker punch. Even those that purport to be well trained revert to this. It looks similar or identical each time; bladed stance, the look back/around, the hand swings up in a hook to the head.  Habits are habits and we are all human. Those habitual acts of violence are concepts meant to point out just that, 'HABITUAL ACTS OF VIOLENCE.'  In addition to this there is the reverse side, how does one act when they are assaulted? Do they flinch and cover? Maybe if they are able to move in time, otherwise they may be knocked out, or they would simply take it on the chin and stumble back. Would they have time to recover? Unlikely.  The other thing is that 'using techniques on multiple assailants won't wo...

Sen Sen No Sen/OODA Mindset.

What is the OODA Loop? There are many that write about it in many different contexts, from ariel Dog Fights to Martial Arts to Self Defense. What does it mean? How is it utilized?  O. Observe O. Orient D. Decide A. Act These are not abstract concepts, in point of fact, we do NOT need to do anything special in order to apply this as we already do this on a regular basis. This is where many seem to miss the point. It is not pointing something out for the sake of applying a concept, nor is it pointing out something we already do just for the sake of pointing it out.  What is the formulation of the concept meant to do then? Why is it pointing out a natural aspect of ourselves?  Because the first to reach ACT wins. This spells the difference between ending an assault or other altercation quickly and going home or being on the receiving end and going to the hospital or the morgue. The whole point is to BREAK the Loop and to reach the ACT portion FIRST.  The point in ...

Between Fact and Fiction.

It has been some years since the onset of my own disenchantment with this community and the things purported to be 'pragmatic/practical/effective.' That disenchantment is still somewhat fresh. It is hard to watch videos or read posts/books that have good material in them, let alone all the shit that tries to pass itself off as gold.  You have all the Kata/Bunkai people on one side, and all the MMA/Anti-Traditionalist people on the other crying, whining, screaming, shouting, bickering basically, about what is 'pragmatic/practical/effective,' yet both advocating the same things without even realizing it.  "You have to be able to use it on a fully resisting opponent in an actual sparring match" they both end up saying and yet both end up disagreeing more often than not.  What does that even mean? Is it the same thing as 'Self-Defense?' What does THAT mean? Is it interchangeable with 'Fighting' or 'Sparring?' What about the term 'Defens...
